Tropical early start

The first "Tropentag" in April at Graz University Station

Extreme temperatures have been recorded at the Graz University climate station since 1894.

The previous temperature record for the month of April was 28.8 °C in 2012. On April 14, 2024, this value was not only significantly exceeded at 30.5 °C, but this day was also a "Tropentag" or "Heisser Tag".

In most years, such days - on which the maximum temperature reaches or exceeds 30.0 °C - are limited to the meteorological summer (June - August), with the previous record-breaker (6 May) coming from the "summer of the century" in 2003.

The first half of April 2024 was generally more than 6 °C warmer than the average for the years 1991- 2020, with new daily records being measured on 7 out of 14 days. After this "early start" to the high summer, however, the predicted drop in temperature will be particularly noticeable in the next few days.

Atmospheric Rivers

"Atmospheric Rivers” (ARs) transport huge amounts of water vapor from the tropics to mid and high latitudes. When they hit land, extreme precipitation often occurs. Even a medium-sized example transports twice as much water as the Amazon River. The illustration shows an extreme case in the Atlantic, which caused severe devastation in Great Britain as storm “Desmond” and then hit Norway as storm “Synne”.

Looking at the record year 2024: historic temperatures at Graz University

The meteorological station at the University of Graz has been collecting extensive information on air temperature for more than 130 years. These data not only provide interesting insights into the climate of the region, but also allow deeper insights into the long-term development of the weather.

Experiencing a heat record: summer 2024 at the University of Graz

A look back at the average temperatures of this year's meteorological summer (1 June to 31 August) on campus makes you listen up: New record values for the months of July and August, the average temperature for the summer was only just surpassed by the "summer of the century" in 2003.

The Warming Stripes of the University of Graz, 1851 - 2022

Based on the method of Ed Hawkins from the University of Reading, climate scientist Armin Schaffer has created so-called "warming stripes" for the University of Graz. These show a clear trend: In particular the hottest average annual temperatures have been increasing in recent years.
